Day 11 | Fasting Focus

Fasting and Self-Control
Galatians 5:13-26

Start believing you can change. Your beliefs control your behavior. The way you think determines the way you feel. And when your feelings become strong enough, they determine the way you act. The person who says, “I can’t do it,” and the person who says, “I can do it,” are both right. Much of the time you set yourself up to be defeated by what you’re saying. Your words reinforce either your right or wrong belief system.

Day 10 | Fasting Focus

Fasting and Self-denial

“And He was saying to them all, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake, he is the one who will save it.”  Luke 9:23-24

Fasting is a physical picture of our spiritual walk with the Lord.

Day 9 | Fasting Focus

The Word tells us in Philippians that the One who began a good work in us will also be the One who completes it. This seems to be one of the most underrated promises in scripture. The Creator, who called us to Him through His Son, is committed to seeing the work in us done. Until the end. I have started many things in my life that I lacked the sensibility to finish, and it is good to know that God does not share my deficiency. As He is both the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end – I believe we can say He sees us as we are today, as we once were and as we will someday be. He sees the whole, the totality of the work that His children are. We are not simply one point in time to our Father, we are a vast multitude of points smeared across the canvas of this life. He is the author, originator and finisher of our faith.

Day 8 | Fasting Focus

You Are God’s Masterpiece

Read Ephesians 2:1-10

One of the reasons I think prayer and fasting are so powerful when combined is that together they activate a chain reaction where we see God’s kingdom manifest on earth. It’s a sequence of: agreement…alignment…assignment. When we come into agreement with God, we are aligned with God’s perfect will on earth as it already is in heaven. When we are aligned with heaven, we find that God can use us in ways we never thought possible; then we begin to walk in our assignment –the purpose that God created us to fulfill.

Day 7 | Fasting Focus

Contemplations on Fasting and Prayer

18 The disciples of John and of the Pharisees were fasting. Then they came and said to Him, “Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?” 19 And Jesus said to them, “Can the friends of the bridegroom fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them they cannot fast. 20 But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days.

– Mark 2:18-20

Day 6 | Fasting Focus

Twisting Baal’s Arm

It’s no surprise that to many, the concept of fasting primarily revolves around that which is being given up. It’s an abstaining from food, from eating patterns, from activities, or the like. It’s a way to say “no” to the flesh and its normal desires, right?

Yet hopefully by now, we at FIRE realize that there is much more to fasting than this.

Day 5 | Fasting Focus

Fasting is not about food; it is about separation.

This separation represents a consecration to the Lord, a change in our relationship with Him. God posed this question to Israel:

Is this the kind of fast I have chosen, only a day for a man to humble himself? Is it only for bowing one’s head like a reed and for lying on sackcloth and ashes? Is that what you call a fast, a day acceptable to the Lord?

Day 4 | Fasting Focus

Fasting and Forgiveness

One of the advantages of fasting is that it puts us in a position to hear more clearly from the Lord because we are humbling ourselves before Him and allowing Him to put His finger on areas in our lives that need adjusting.

Day 3 | Fasting Focus

Fasting – It’s in the Waiting

Isaiah 40:31 (KJV) – But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

Isaiah 64:4 – Since ancient times no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides you, who acts on behalf of those who wait for him.

Day 2 | Fasting Focus

Fasting is hard. Believing and following Jesus isn’t easy either. I imagine this is a large part of the reason He left us the Spirit as our Helper. God needs to literally dwell in us to actualize the victory He desires us to walk in. A passive, easy life would not require such a dramatic acquisition – but a passive life does not appear to be part of the equation in the mathematics of God’s plan.
